Home is Where the Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose
From New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Marriage and You Shouldn’t Have Come Here comes a chilling family thriller about the (sometimes literal) skeletons in the closet.
After their mother passes, three estranged siblings reunite to sort out her estate. Beth, the oldest, never left home. She stayed with her mom, caring for her until the very end. Nicole, the middle child, has been kept at arm’s length due to her ongoing battle with a serious drug addiction. Michael, the youngest, lives out of state and hasn’t been back to their small Wisconsin town since their father ran out on them seven years before.
While going through their parent’s belongings, the siblings stumble upon a collection of home videos and decide to revisit those happier memories. However, the nostalgia is cut short when one of the VHS tapes reveals a night back in 1999 that none of them have any recollection of. On screen, their father appears covered in blood. What follows is a dead body and a pact between their parents to get rid of it, before the video abruptly ends.
Beth, Nicole, and Michael must now decide whether to leave the past in the past or uncover the dark secret their mother took to her grave.
This was a great book to read in October. It’s fairly short and I was able to get through it quickly.
Beth, Nicole, and Michael are all back home together for the first time in years. Beth has been there taking care of their mother. Their father disappeared 7 years ago. They grew up in a small town in Wisconsin. Nicole is still there, but she is an addict. Michael was the only one that got out. He lives and works in California. When going through their mom’s things, they find a lot of vhs tapes. They randomly pick one from 1999. After watching it, another video popped up on it. It showed their parents with the local missing girl. And she wasn’t alive. Their dad convinces their mom that they can’t call the police. It messed both of them up after and things were never the same. Another girl went missing and their mom automatically thought the dad killed her. Nicole later reads her mom’s journals and the whole story slowly comes out.
I was able to figure out part of the mystery, but not all of it. The pacing was decent and I found it hard to put down. I’ll definitely read another book by this author again.
I gave this book 5 stars.
Have you read this? Is it on your TBR?
