Why they say it. Sometimes a genuine routing issue, sometimes a brush off to get you off the phone. They may also be testing whether you are worth an internal introduction.
Do not: Do not just ask for a name and hang up, which wastes the rapport you have and gets you a cold handoff at best.
Say this
No problem, and I appreciate you telling me straight rather than letting me ramble at the wrong person. Before I get out of your hair, you clearly know how things work there, so your read is valuable. Who owns this, and what is the smartest way to bring it to them so it does not land as just another cold pitch?
Then ask. When you hand this off, what would make them actually take a look versus ignore it like the rest of their inbox?
