“We already have one of those, our current tool does this.”
Why they say it. They are pattern matching you into a category they already feel solved, so they can mentally file you away and move on. They are reacting to the label, not your actual value.
Do not: Do not argue that you are technically in a different category or get into a feature checklist war, which keeps you trapped in their frame.
That makes sense, on the surface there is real overlap, so I would not expect you to see the difference from the outside. The teams that switched to us were also told their existing tool did this, but it turned out it did the easy 80 percent and quietly punted on the part that actually cost them time. Can I ask how that category is performing for you on the harder edge cases, not the everyday ones?
Then ask. If your current tool does this well, what is the workaround your team still runs to fill the gaps?
