Selena Gomez is booked and busy, but she’ll never be too busy for Wizards of Waverly Place. The superstar appears in the first episode of the upcoming Wizards of Waverly Place reboot, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, bringing an uncontrollable young witch to her brother, a returning David Henrie, for magical training. Here’s everything to know about the series.
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is another family comedy
The new Disney show follows a grown-up Justion Russo as he balances his mortal life with wife Giada (Mimi Gianopulos) and their kids Milo (Max Matenko) and Roman (Alkaio Thiele), with his duties as a wizard teacher to Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown).
On September 24, Disney released the first trailer for the show, setting up the tension between the mortals and the wizards, and Justin in full dad-mode, doling out sage advice.
More of the original cast may come back
In addition to appearing in the first episode, Gomez is an executive producer on the new series, with Henrie returning as a main cast member.
Though no other members of the OG Russo family have officially signed on for the reboot yet, Henrie responded to fan concerns on Instagram. “We definitely plan on bringing back the original cast for the series order,” he promised in one comment, per screenshots.
In a behind-the-scenes video, Henrie and Gomez were both delighted to be back on set, and it’s clear that the new series will have the same wacky tone as the original.
The reboot is coming just in time for Halloween.
Disney Channel will air the first two episodes on October 29 at 8 p.m. eastern time. The first nine episodes of the series will be available to stream on Disney+ and Disney Channel On Demand the following day, per the Hollywood Reporter.
WBWP was announced back in January 2024. “So excited,” Gomez wrote alongside the Deadline announcement on Instagram Stories before sharing a throwback photo with Henrie from the series with the caption, “We’re back.” Gomez first starred in the magical family sitcom from 2007 to 2012, as well as two made-for-TV films, Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie (2009) and The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex (2013).
