Sophie Turner Gave Her First Post-Joe Jonas Divorce Interview, and It's So Revealing

More than a little like Sansa Stark herself, Sophie Turner has endured sexism, mistreatment, a fairy-tale romance gone awry (though obviously, Joe Jonas is no Joffrey Baratheon) and the criticism of a public that viewed her as merely someone’s wife. But the Queen in the North went back home to rule, and Turner is thriving, too. In her first post-split interview, Turner opened up about the tumult that followed her very public, messy separation from Jonas, the casual misogyny in being called one of “the wives,” and the girlfriends—including Taylor Swift—who came to her rescue.

“Those were the worst few days of my life,” Turner told British Vogue about the tabloid narrative that painted her as a “partier” to Jonas’s doting dad immediately following his filing for divorce. For legal reasons, she couldn’t talk about the split directly, but she did explain how the media was able to—briefly—“mum-shame” her. “I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn’t leave. My kids were in the States and I couldn’t get to them because I had to finish Joan. And all these articles started coming out…It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother—mum guilt is so real! I just kept having to say to myself, ‘None of this is true. You are a good mum and you’ve never been a partier.’”

Thankfully, the tide swiftly turned, with many outlets—including Glamour!—calling BS on the “bad mom” narrative. “If something like this had happened to me 10 years ago I don’t think I would have had the same support. I just feel very lucky to be alive in a time when people are open-minded,” said Turner, adding, “Thank fuck for Gen Z.”

Another false narrative pushed by the media was the framing of herself, Nick Jonas’s wife Priyanka Chopra and Kevin Jonas’s wife Danielle as a three-woman unit, a counterpart to the band. “There was a lot of attention on the three brothers, and the wives. Well, we were always called the wives, and I hated that,” she said. “It was kind of this plus-one feeling. And that’s nothing to do with him—in no way did he make me feel that—it was just that the perception of us was as the groupies in the band.”

Once she was no longer one of “the wives” and needed a place in New York to stay with her two daughters, Taylor Swift stepped in. “Taylor was an absolute hero to me this year,” said Turner, who stayed in one of Swift’s apartments for free while she and Jonas sorted out a custody arrangement. “I’ve never been more grateful to anyone than I am for her because she took my children and me, and provided us with a home and a safe space…She really has a heart of gold.”
