Taking to the red carpet to celebrate the fourth season of Emily in Paris this week, Lily Collins showed off her own razored bob—and it was pretty perfect. The hairstylist behind the look, Gregory Russell, created a sleek parting that graduated down into more texture at the bottom.

George Northwood, London’s king of bobs, is also a fan of Collins’s look. As for what exactly makes a razored bob the cut that it is? “Unlike bobs cut with scissors, this is cut with a razor, which gives a slightly jagged, textured edge,” he says. “It almost looks a bit torn at the bottom, so is less harsh than a normal bob, which gives it a more modern feel.”

Translation? One-length bobs that have been cut with scissors tend to look overly formal, so this technique lends a slightly undone, cool finish to the hair, whether it’s been styled or not. In Northwood’s view, cuts like these should be worn as naturally as possible: “Kind of straight, but a natural kind of straight,” he says.
