She has the matching Miramar Weekender for traveling as well. “It has tons of pockets and is extremely practical,” she says. “I noticed with a lot of bags, I’ll think, ‘Oh, this is a nice bag. It’s going to have tons of organization in it.’ And then it has nothing! That is something Vera Bradley is really great about. I don’t want to have to put a thousand other pouches and things to organize in my bag.”
Her secret to only packing in a carry-on
Because she travels so much, Deschanel says she’s become “obsessed with packing.” In addition to have a great bag with lots of compartments, as mentioned above, her best organization tip is to buy compression packing cubes. “Compression is important,” she stresses. “Because the regular packing cubes take up more room.”
Deschanel says she also likes to come up with a capsule wardrobe for her trip so that everything mixes and matches. “I don’t check bags, I like to travel carry-on only, so I’m always kind of scheming with my packing to make sure it’s really tight,” she says.
The best sneakers for traveling
Deschanel says she tries to only pack flat shoes when she travels because heels take up too much room. She also likes smaller sneakers that can multitask, like Supergas or Vans. “Big sneakers, there’s really no need unless you’re a marathon runner and have to jog,” she says. “But you can work out in Supergas or Vans and then wear them walking down the street and they look cool. They’re not a giant athletic shoe. It’s just unnecessary.”
The cute summer-to-fall transition shoes
When she’s not traveling, Deschanel has been all about Larroudé shoes lately. “They make all these cute little Mary Janes that are flat or just a short, chunky heel,” she says. “They have some higher ones, but they’re very stable. I generally just wear flats or wedges or something stable. My feet can’t be squished anymore.”
A moisturizer that won’t break the bank
“People charge so much for moisturizer, and I don’t know why,” Deschanel says. “I love skincare products, but cleanser and moisturizer shouldn’t be crazy expensive because there are so many good options that are very reasonable.”
Her favorite? Weleda Skin Food. “I have dry skin, so it’s not for everybody,” she says. “But I put it on every night, my skin is still hydrated when I wake up, and it’s cheap.” Deschanel says she uses it on her hands, arms, and face and even keeps a travel size in her purse. “I know people who even use it on their lips, it’s so good. It’s an all-around really good product.”
The lip gloss that gives her that “no-makeup makeup” look
Another everyday beauty product that Deschanel recommends is the Ilia Beauty Tinted Lip Oil. “It’s so pretty and sheer,” Deschanel says. “It just kind of doesn’t look like anything. I had it on in this movie I did, and the director was like, ‘What was that? Because it looked like you’re not wearing lipstick.’ It’s the best for every day. It just makes you look fresh and natural, but glossy and polished.”
The top that’s replaced T-shirts for her
Deschanel says the latest T-shirt styles are not for her. “I’m really particular about T-shirts, and I’m just hoping some people start making some with shorter sleeve lengths. I can’t deal with this mid-biceps sleeve. I’m sure it looks great on some people, but it does not look pretty on me. Every time I try them, I’m like, why do I have to get T-shirts tailored?”
