West Ham's Antonio undergoes leg surgery after traffic accident

West Ham forward Michail Antonio has undergone surgery for a fractured leg following a road traffic accident on Saturday.

West Ham confirmed on Sunday that the 34-year-old would “continue to be monitored over the coming days” and that further updates on his condition would be provided “when appropriate”.

The Premier League club said: “Everyone wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news as well as extending a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michail in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and the medical team who continue to aid him in his recovery.”

West Ham announced on Saturday that Antonio was “stable, conscious and communicating” after the crash in Epping.

London-born Antonio, a Jamaica international, is in his 10th season with West Ham after joining from Nottingham Forest in 2015.

He has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season, including 11 starts in the Premier League, and featured in the 3-1 defeat at Leicester in midweek, coming on as a second-half substitute.

Antonio has scored 83 goals in 323 appearances for The Hammers and helped them win the Conference League in 2023.

He began his football career with non-league Tooting and Mitcham before moving into the professional ranks with Reading.

Antonio has also had spells with Cheltenham, Southampton, Colchester and Sheffield Wednesday, while he made his Jamaica debut in 2021 and has since scored five goals in 21 appearances for the nation.

The Jamaica Football Federation confirmed in a statement it was aware of Antonio’s situation, with head coach Steve McClaren adding: “On behalf of the entire group of players, support staff and technical staff, I would like to wish Michail a speedy recovery.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him at this time.”
